Celebrating 40 years of the Dampier to Bunbury Pipeline
Today we celebrate one of Western Australia’s most significant pieces of energy infrastructure, marking 40 years of the Dampier to Bunbury Natural Gas Pipeline (DBNGP) and the critical role it has played and continues to play in facilitating the state's economic growth.
Spanning more than 1,500 kilometers, the DBNGP is the nation’s longest natural gas pipeline. The DBNGP is vital to the reliable transportation of natural gas from the vast off-shore and on-shore reserves in the northern and western parts of Western Australia to energy consumers further south, including to some of the state's largest industrial businesses and employers.
Built with an initial capacity of 240 TJ/day, the DBNGP has been extended and expanded multiple times to meet the energy demands of an expanding State and has continually adapted to new challenges and opportunities to support a changing economy. The DBNGP today has a total firm full haul capacity of 845 TJ/day.
Chief Executive Officer Craig de Laine said the pipeline's continued significance is a testament to the early planners and decision makers, whose foresight provided the support needed to build the pipeline and, as a consequence, laid the foundation for the State's industrial and mining operations.
"We are grateful to those in government, industry and communities who at the time saw the pipeline as a strategic investment in the State, and an enabler of its economic growth and prosperity. Four decades on, the DBNGP continues to be a truly world-class asset which the State can continue to be proud of.
“We value the close relationships with our customers and key stakeholders, which provides us with the confidence to continue to make further investments in the pipeline over time. As a result, the DBNGP has evolved into a modern energy asset that is as important today as it was at inception. The DBNGP will continue to evolve to deliver the energy that our customers require.
“I would also like to acknowledge the dedication and commitment of our people to the DBNGP, many of whom have worked on the pipeline for decades and some from as far back as when the DBNGP was built in 1984.
"Our focus on safety, our customers, our people and performance means we can be relied upon to continue to deliver energy to Western Australian businesses well into the future."
