Welcome boost for new Pilbara Carbon Capture and Storage project
Australian Gas Infrastructure Group welcomes today’s announcement from the Western Australian government of a $15 million grant to support the Pilbara Carbon Capture and Storage transmission project. This project would deliver key infrastructure needed to help support the decarbonisation of heavy industry in the Pilbara.
The project would see AGIG develop an onshore transmission pipeline for an offshore multi-user Carbon Capture and Storage hub in the Pilbara, to transport carbon dioxide from facilities on the Burrup into depleted gas fields for permanent sequestration.
AGIG Chief Executive Officer Craig de Laine thanked the Western Australian government and said the announcement sends a positive signal to proponents exploring opportunities to decarbonise heavy industry.
“Government support is vitally important for advancing the Carbon Capture and Storage industry, which we know can play a significant part in achieving net zero if fostered to its full potential, especially for hard-to-abate industries.
“We believe that having all decarbonisation options on the table will help us reach net zero targets quicker and can better support industry to continue to thrive through the energy transition.”
Mr de Laine said AGIG has a track record of successfully developing ambitious renewable energy projects across the country.
These include Hydrogen Park South Australia as the first grid-connected electrolyser at megawatt scale, and more recently Hydrogen Park Murray Valley – a 10-megawatt renewable hydrogen facility that will be the equal largest renewable hydrogen facility in Australia when construction is complete, expected in late 2025.
“Our project in the Pilbara has the potential to be a catalyst for Carbon Capture and Storage implementation in the state and a key step in reducing industrial emissions.
“We are excited to work with our large industrial customers to deliver transformational carbon reduction initiatives, and we commend the government for its vision to be a world leader in this technology through the release of its inaugural Carbon Capture and Storage plan today.”
Background
AGIG owns, operates and invests in infrastructure which delivers gas to more than two million homes and businesses. It powers generators, mines, manufacturers and household appliances and the combined network makes AGIG one of the largest gas infrastructure businesses in Australia.
AGIG manages over 35,000km of world-class distribution networks, more than 4,300km of transmission pipelines and 60 petajoules of storage capacity, valued at a combined $10 billion. We employ approximately 500 people with more than 1,600 contractors working on our business.
AGIG is committed to playing its role in reaching net zero by helping customers to decarbonise through infrastructure solutions including Carbon Capture and Storage and renewable gas projects.
AGIG owns and operates Hydrogen Park SA, the largest operational electrolyser in Australia, and has a number of other renewable hydrogen projects under construction or in feasibility stage including Hydrogen Park Murray Valley, Hydrogen Park Gladstone and Hydrogen Park Wagga Wagga.
